Student Experience
We believe that developing your spirit, mind, and body is a valuable way to establish the character you will need to succeed for life after Highlands College. That’s why one of our Four Pillars is Character Formation, and our Sports and Wellness program is designed to give you the tools to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle while also using sports to grow your leadership abilities.
Expedition
Godly character and the ability to collaborate as a team are necessary for long-term success in ministry. Our students have the opportunity to strengthen these intentional traits during Expedition—our annual full-day endurance challenge.
Teams of students work together to navigate obstacles and accomplish common goals. They gain invaluable experience in people-centered leadership principles, relying on God and relationships to persevere and achieve more than they ever imagined.
Birmingham Marathon
The Birmingham Marathon hosted by Highlands College is a defining milestone in our students’ character formation journey, embodying our commitment to develop character, perseverance, and the value of community.
Inspired by Philippians 3:14—“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”—this annual event challenges students to push their limits while fostering physical, mental, and spiritual resilience.
Cheered on by the HC Team, family and friends, and our Birmingham community, students experience the power of unity and determination, confident that “if we don’t quit, we win.“
Students’ Race Experiences
- Freshmen: 10K (6.2 mi)
- Sophomores + Upperclassmen: Half Marathon (13.1 mi)

Intramural Sports
Christ-like character to lead and be a part of a team becomes even stronger through intramural sports. Our students choose a sport to participate in throughout the semester and play on co-ed teams each week leading up to our college-wide Sports Championship. You will finish better than you started and have a stronger community around you after every season.
Mission Trips
Our cross-cultural ministry trips equip students to learn contextualized ministry from global partners and apply their studies in real-world settings. By working alongside local partners, students support long-term ministry efforts while gaining a deeper understanding of diverse worldviews, religions, and cultures. These trips also foster community, spiritual growth, and character development as students engage in the global task of sharing the Good News, with 42% of the world still unreached.
