Faculty Highlight | Dr. Naomi Noguchi Reese

INTRODUCING

Dr. Naomi Noguchi Reese

Associate Professor of Theological Studies

Dr. Reese is originally from Japan and decided she wanted to move to the United States to learn English. She researched and applied for the most affordable higher education she could find and made the move.

After living in the US, she gave her life to Christ. She dedicated years to studying more about the Lord and theology, eventually furthering her education at Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School.

We are proud to have her investing in the next generation of ministry leaders as our Associate Professor of Theological Studies. We sat down with Dr. Reese to learn more about her passion for teaching and her journey to Highlands College.

Can you tell us about a few accomplishments you’re most proud of?

I have several publications, and my Ph.D. dissertation (2016) is set to be published in 2024 or 2025. Currently, I am writing a book on the theology of Shusaku Endo for future publication.

What is your favorite part about teaching?

I especially enjoy interacting with my students during class discussions.

What is a fun fact about you?

I am a coffee connoisseur. My favorite cup is the Golden Monkey from Frothy Monkey.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Don’t give up!

What relationship has influenced you most throughout your life?

My relationship with my mother is the most precious and influential one to me.

What did you do prior to entering academia?

I briefly worked as an executive assistant at Japan Airlines in Los Angeles, CA.

What do you hope students will gain from your course?

My hope for my students is that they will love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength through studying His Word in my class.

What are your areas of expertise?

Pneumatology, Public Theology, Cultural Engagement, the Theology of Colin Gunton, and the Theology of Shusaku Endo.

What quote or scripture verse has significantly impacted you?

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
