INTRODUCING
Marguerite Armistead
Professor Marguerite Armistead, M.A., is the Writing Center Director and Professor of English Composition at Highlands College. She teaches courses like College Composition (ENGL 103) and leads a creative writing small group for students who are aspiring Christian authors.
Mason Iyobebe, a sophomore majoring in Family Ministry at Highlands College, took a moment to reflect on the profound impact Professor Armistead has made on his academic journey and writing endeavors.
“Professor Armistead is genuinely one of the kindest professors I’ve ever met. From the first class I had with her, her passion for writing has been evident and inspiring. She’s such a great encourager. I still remember when I sent her some of my work; she gave such thoughtful comments and compliments on it. She really knows how to push students to want to learn more about Christian writing.“
— Mason Iyobebe, Family Ministry Major
In addition to his coursework, Mason highlights the incredible experience of being part of the creative writing small group led by Professor Armistead. “The creative writing small group she leads is amazing, too! You can tell she really cares about the future of Christian authors, and being able to write alongside her and other students has been incredibly fun!”
We asked Professor Armistead a few questions to better understand who she is and what she enjoys about teaching at Highlands College:
Accomplishments
Jesus is the only One who has accomplished things in my life; I am utterly lost without Him.
What is a fun fact about you?
One fun fact would be that I backpacked through Thailand and climbed up the seven levels, through the water coming down, in the Erawan Waterfall in Erawan National Park.
What’s the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received is to do unto others as I would have done unto me.
What relationship has influenced you most throughout your life?
The relationship that has had the most influence on me is my relationship with Christ, which began when I was around eight or nine years old.
What did you do prior to entering academia?
Prior to entering academia, I was a student. I have always loved learning, which is exploring new horizons and concepts.
What do you consider your areas of expertise?
My areas of expertise include writing, reading, drawing, and gardening.
A quote or scripture verse that has impacted you?
A verse that impacted me when my husband was fighting cancer was “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (New International Version, Rom. 8:37).
Why do you love working for HC?
I do not really think I “work” at HC; I am honored to minister to my students so that they can improve as Christian writers.
What do you hope students will gain from your course?
It is my deepest hope that my students will learn how to use their unique, God-given writing voices to share the gospel message to the ends of the Earth in a clear and effective way.
Thank you, Professor Armistead, for all you do. Your love for Jesus, passion for writing and academia, and dedication to investing in the next generation of ministry leaders make Highlands College an exceptional place to grow, learn, and flourish.
