When I first came to Highlands College, sharing my writing felt almost impossible. I came from a boarding school that discouraged both Christianity and creativity. I had always loved writing—ever since I was 13 and heard a poem that moved me deeply—and it was something I kept close. Writing became worship and a way to God when I didn’t know how to speak my thoughts out loud. I never thought it would be something God could use—until Highlands College made me believe differently.

I first heard about the Creative God, Creative Writing small group at a kickoff event on campus at The Forum in my first week of school. Professor Armistead personally invited me, and though I was nervous, I decided to attend. We took time to write pieces of poetry and share what we came up with. I didn’t want to share what I was working on, but there was something safe about the space. Everyone there was dedicated to letting God speak through our creative writing and sharing it for God’s glory.

Now, we meet regularly, sometimes with guest speakers and self-published authors, and collaborate on projects like rewriting parables. Every session feels like a step closer to God. I’ve learned that writing isn’t just creative expression; it’s a way of worship.

Before Highlands College, I honestly thought I was done with writing. But God reminded me that He’s not finished with my gift—He’s still writing something in me. He is a creative God with no limits to how He moves in the Church.

This group has helped me grow—not just as a writer but as a person. I’ve had to trust the Holy Spirit to speak through my words, even when they’re personal or complex to share. I’ve started to see writing not just as something I do but as something God does through me. I’ve learned the importance of consistency and staying committed to a community long-term. Now, writing is part of my daily rhythm and how I talk to God.

I’m grateful to be part of this group and for the people in it. The Highlands College team has greatly encouraged me to step out, try new things, and trust my voice. They’ve reminded me that creativity is a tool for the Kingdom. That writing isn’t “just writing”—it’s a way to reflect heaven. This small group has opened dreams I never thought I could have.

My encouragement is to pursue God creatively—to see that spending time with Him doesn’t have to look just one way. Whether through writing, music, design, film, or something totally outside the box, God delights in our creativity. It doesn’t have to be perfect or polished. What matters is that it’s genuine. God isn’t looking for a certain “type” of creativity—He’s just looking for hearts willing to create with Him. My story is still being written—but this chapter began with a small group, a few faithful voices, and a gentle reminder from God that He will use my gifts. He’ll use yours, too. ■
