AT HIGHLANDS COLLEGE, we believe that honoring students is more than a kind gesture—it reflects the culture of honor and legacy we’re called to create. Born out of that belief, the Torch Awards is an evening set apart to celebrate our students’ journey, calling, and character.
The idea came from a simple place: a college memory that stuck with me. I remembered what it felt like to be seen, celebrated, and surrounded by community. So, in 2023, we launched our first-ever Torch Awards. The Holy Spirit breathed on the idea, resulting in a profoundly moving and joy-filled night where students laughed, cried, and felt honored for everything they had poured into the school year.

The entire student body is invited. We roll out the red carpet, we dress up, and most importantly, our Highlands College Team—the same people who walk with students through classes, Chapel, and coaching—serve them. From picking up plates to delivering desserts, our teammates become waitstaff for the evening, not because it’s trendy, but because servanthood is our culture. Jesus washed feet—we’ll gladly carry a tray.
Some of the awards are peer-nominated superlatives, which bring fun and laughter. Others are Culture Awards, chosen by our staff to highlight the students who embody the values that define Highlands College as America’s Ministry Leadership University. Students don’t know they’re honored until their name is read, and they’re called to the stage. We share specific stories, moments, and even statistics to remind them how much they’ve grown and accomplished throughout the year.
The Torch Awards is our chance to tell the students: “You’ve made a difference. You’ve grown. You’ve served. And we see you.” ■
