Community Oral Facial Surgery is a small, family-operated oral and maxillofacial surgery practice with four offices in Alabama and Georgia. FOR DR. JOSH AND CARLIN EVERTS, owners of Community Oral Facial Surgery, the Highlands College Community Partner program is a clear investment in the future to expand the Kingdom of God while building a lasting community and creating eternal impact through their intentional generosity.
“Carlin and I feel very passionate about our partnership with Highlands College because we truly believe in the mission the College is fulfilling,” Josh shared. “We know the value of increasing the hands and feet of Jesus in the world; being a small part of that is the greatest benefit.”
The Everts believe God will place opportunities in front of them that align clearly with their calling. They recognized this partnership as an opportunity to invest their business resources into a mission aligned with their faith. “We had complete peace about partnering with Highlands College, knowing our investment would create a return that advances the Kingdom year after year. There’s no greater reward than knowing we are helping build a future generation of leaders for Christ.”
As believers and parents, the Everts think about the future and what their children need to become leaders as mature young adults. “We have a heart for the people that are going into ministry, but that heart perspective shifts when we consider that our children could be at Highlands College one day,” Carlin explained. “We want to support what God has called them to do. We realize now that our calling is to be generous in what God has given us to make an impact that carries on to future generations.”
“The Lord has been very generous and gracious to us. We know we have received this financial ability specifically for Kingdom-minded investment,” Josh shared. “Through biblical higher education, Highlands College is preparing leaders of the future, and we feel the College is on the cusp of something truly great.”
Beyond the future benefits, the Everts have experienced present-day growth, maturity, and an expanded sense of community through the Community Partnership program. Carlin reflected on the personal impact the partnership has had in a season of life that can sometimes feel isolating. “As a small business in a unique field, it can be easy to feel alone when working hard to create and steward a family and career. Being part of the Community Partner program brought us into a circle of people walking similar paths and one season ahead who could speak into our experiences. I’ve gained support from other mothers and wives who understand the balance of raising a family while supporting their husbands in leadership.”
Knowing these events and opportunities exist has made the Everts continually desire to invest more in the College. Each gathering, prayer service, and opportunity to connect with other like-minded leaders has paved the way for meaningful relationships, mentorship, encouragement, and wisdom, reinforcing the Everts’ commitment to the mission of Highlands College.
“Being a Community Partner has expanded our network and allowed us to build valuable relationships with other business leaders,” Josh explained. “We are reaping the rewards and the benefits of these relationships.”
With a much larger circle of people to call on for business advice and biblical encouragement, Carlin emphasizes the mutual growth and maturity in her and Josh’s faith, resulting in better versions of themselves. “It is impactful to grow alongside others seeking the same goals in different professions. We both have an overwhelming desire for others to experience the same personal growth that we have through this community partnership with Highlands College.”
Frequently analyzing their financial stewardship and gift of generosity in each season, the Everts have never wavered on the ability to be a part of the Highlands College Community Partner program. “We both have an overwhelming sense of peace and joy that we get to do this, to be a part of building for the future,” Carlin said.
“As a young couple with a young business and young children, we look forward to taking our current investment to the next level. We desire to continue to grow our business and to bring our children into it so that they know why we’re working so hard—it’s because we have this Kingdom-minded perspective, and we want to be able to give even more than we are giving now.”
Carlin encourages other leaders who share their values to consider joining the Highlands College Community Partner program.
“If the Holy Spirit leads you to be a Partner, be obedient. If you have the ability to do this, know that it will have a greater impact than you can imagine and touch millions of lives. We have no idea what the Lord’s going to do with it. But my hope and prayer are that when we get to heaven, God will say, ‘I gave you this business, I gave you this profit, I gave you this financial wealth—you did the right thing with it.’ That’s what we want to hear, and I’m sure other business leaders who are believers want the same thing—to hear: ‘Well done. You used what I gave you, and you used it well.’ I can’t think of a greater reward.” ■
