THE CREATIVE WRITING SMALL GROUP at Highlands College was born out of a deep conviction and remains a thriving community where students are encouraged to explore their writing voices in a faith-filled environment.

“In 2021, God put a nudge in my heart that He wants to speak through this next generation,” Armistead shared. This small group has since blossomed, growing from just four members to a dynamic gathering of 20 participants who meet weekly to develop their creative writing skills.

The sessions are structured yet inviting—students begin with prayer, followed by writing exercises and sharing their work in a supportive atmosphere. They have explored diverse literary forms, from haiku and sonnets to novellas and devotional writing.

Beyond honing technical skills, the Creative Writing Small Group provides a spiritual refuge where students can express themselves authentically. “We invite Jesus into the space and ask for His words,” Armistead explained. “It’s a fresh way to share the Gospel, reaching those who may never walk into a church but might pick up a story imbued with biblical truth.”

As the group continues to flourish, its impact extends beyond the Highlands College campus, reaffirming the power of words to inspire, heal, and bring others closer to Christ. ■
